A Dash of D.I.Y.

D.I.Y. in the eyes of a broke, thrifty, fashion loving, wannabe stylist, 17 year old.

New hardware DIY post coming soon!

Hardware bracelets have been trending lately so I decided to take a spin off those and make a few of my own!

Here’s a sneak peek of some of the things I made and with my next post, I’ll show you how I made them!

I’d like to start off saying I’m sorry. Since I last posted in January, A LOT has been going on! With my high school graduation coming up this Sunday (yay!), I decided it would be a fitting blog post to reflect on what has been going on these past few months that I’d stopped blogging, so I’ve compiled a few pictures taken from my handy-dandy iPhone! I left off last talking about my high school’s Children’s Theatre production, Seussical Jr! The show was so much fun and by far one of my favorite shows to costume.

Shortly after, I was involved in running/designing in my school’s Fashion Club first ever Charity Bash Fashion Show! As an officer of the club, I was honored to be able to help raise over $700 dollars for our school’s charity of choice, The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago.

Hey Everybody!

Unfortunately, I have been very busy these past two weeks due to the fact that I am on the costume crew for my high school’s musical (which actually opens tomorrow night!!). I apologize for not having any recent posts, but I will definitely post a new D.I.Y. soon!

I can’t wait to get back to a normal schedule, but I also can’t wait for my next post! I think you guys will like it… and I’ll even give you a hint… JEWELRY! And there will be more than one piece so I’m excited for that. Thank you guys for being so patient, I love you all!

DIY Denim Pencil Case With Skull

During the summer season, I know I definitely followed the trend of cutting old, high waisted pants into shorts! The result of that was having a LOT of extra denim pant legs, and I knew that denim, the durable fabric that it is, needed to be made into something that I would get a lot of use out of. I decided on making a pencil case/makeup bag. I’d be able to put my writing utensils and/or makeup supplies without being worried that they would bleed through to the other side. My choice to paint a skull on it was purely out of boredom, but I am very pleased with the result of my design. Also, I decided to add the mint green zipper because I liked the pastel color against the light washed denim! To read how to do it, click below!

About Me

My name is Katie Turner and I’m a 17 year old girl. I started doing DIYs so I would be able to express my sense of style, without breaking my very small budget. I’m a frequent at thrift stores, and I even work at one now! I’m constantly on other fashion blogs and websites looking for my newest inspiration. Some of my biggest influences are my mother, Leandra Medine (Man Repeller), Jenni Radosevich (I Spy DIY), and my boyfriend who has always kept his unique style no matter what else anybody says.

My goal with this blog is to raise awareness for how easy and money conscious it is to make things yourself! Being in high school with a part-time job means that I can’t afford those amazing sunglasses I saw while looking at pictures of Milan Fashion Week, but it does mean that I can go out, buy a cheap pair of aviators and bling the crap put of them for under $10. Instead of paying $80 for an iphone wallet case, I made my own for under $10 as well!

Well, I hope you like my blog! Take a look around and tell me what you think 🙂 Thank you, it means a lot that you took the time to check out my blog! -K

DIY Glitter iPhone Wallet Case

To start off this DIY, I would like to say thank you for everybody who is checking out my blog 🙂 It really means a lot!

So this all started when my friend opened up her Michael Kors iPhone Wristlet. The second I saw it, I HAD to have it! Unfortunately at the time I was unemployed and broke, so an $80 phone case was out of the question. Nevertheless, I still had to have one so I went on eBay and searched for a used one and there still weren’t any in my price range. I ended up stumbling across a plain white wallet case being sold by the ton from China for around $3 and I ordered it right away knowing I could do SOMETHING with it! And that bring us here to my next DIY!
